Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 774
Eagle. 1795 13 leaves. EF-45. Probably wiped with a jewelers cloth as the fields have a reflective quality. Some minor handling marks, and the surfaces appear to have been disturbed very lightly at some time in the past. Always a popular type coin and one that should be inspected by prospective bidders as the problems are present, but minor.

Eagle. 1854-0 Large Date. PCGS graded AU-58. Many times rarer that the Small Date variety and easily distinguishable. A fully lustrous specimen that must have been plucked from circulation shortly after issue. Most of the surviving examples are found in low grade and according to Walter Breen when he wrote his Encyclopedia in 1988, 'uncirculateds' were completely unknown. This lovely example ranks high within the condition census as PCGS has graded but 4 in AU-58 with 2 higher.

Eagle. 1857. NGC graded Proof 66. This monumental offering is possibly unique in Proof condition. Not only is this coin an ultra rarity, but the grade is ultra high at Proof-66. There is no other Proof 1857 Eagle in the Smithsonian, the ANS, even in the Harry Bass specialized gold collection.
This 1857 Eagle has only appeared for sale only twice within the past century, both times at public auction. The first appearance was in 1922 as lot #287 in the still famous and world-renowned sale of the James Ten Eyck collection. Although there were many rarities in this sale, this coin must have been considered one of the highlights. John H. Clapp purchased the coin for $40 but later sold it via Private Treaty as a part of his collection to Louis Eliasberg in 1942. Louis Eliasberg began an unparalleled quest to acquire an example of every United States gold coin ever minted and nearly completed the task before his death. Ultimately, his collection was sold at public auction in October 1982. In this sale, the 1857 Liberty Eagle was offered as lot #702 and realized $77,000.
Other rarities may come and go, but here is one that stands alone, not only unique as the sole surviving Proof issue from 1857 Eagle mintage, but in superb gem proof condition. Nearly perfect surfaces, with excellent contrast between the devices and the deep mirror fields. A coin which has it all, rarity, condition and a long proven track record of price increases.

Eagle. 1862. Proof 60 plus. A dazzeling cameo proof specimen with full mirror fields against frosty devices. Some faint hairlines can be seen under magnification when held under a Halogen light. Some cloudiness appears around the surfaces, possibly the result of being wiped with a jewler's cloth (a common practice years ago). Only 35 made, all February 16. We believe 10 to 12 survive and perhaps this is a liberal estimate.

Eagle. 1864-S. Nearly identical to the other '64-S, this example exhibits a bit stronger of a strike with a few added light contact marks. To have two examples to choose from in the same sale is unheard of. As stated previously, NGC has graded but 2 (this and the previous coin) with none higher. NGC graded EF-45.

Lot 820
Eagle. 1920-S. PCGS graded MS-64. One of the classic rarities of the Indian Eagle series! Indeed, a sensational coin that is several orders of magnitude bolder and flashier than the run of the mill Mint State wanabes. In terms of overall color and appearance, it plainly belongs in a class by itself. The fields are satin-smooth; the devices, free from annoying nicks and scratches; and the central portions; always a sticking point when it comes to whether a 1920-S is choice or not; are bold throughout. This includes full, wafting hair waves over Liberty's ear, complete separation on the raised edges of the headband, unimprovable feather detail in the war bonnet, and an eagle that soars above its competition. PCGS has only graded 3 coins this high, with 2 graded higher.
Unlike the 1930-S and 1933, 1920-S has never been found in hoards. A small group was located in New York, but they were all weakly struck and bagmarked, clearly not the quality we have here, this coin having a full and complete LIBERTY and free of annoying ticks and marks. A foremost coin for the specialist to savor day after day.
